“Empowering Women Farmers in Eastern Uganda: Breaking Barriers in Pig Farming”
Key Ecological Challenges
Women constitute 70% of Uganda’s agricultural workforce, yet they often lack equal access to resources, training, and income opportunities. HOG4Education’s women empowerment program challenges these inequalities by providing specialized support that enables female farmers to build successful pig farming enterprises. Over 60 women have transformed their lives through our program, generating collective monthly income exceeding 15 million UGX while becoming community leaders and role models.

Understanding Women's Challenges in Ugandan Agriculture
Land Access and Ownership: Only 24% of women in Eastern Uganda own land independently, limiting their ability to establish permanent agricultural operations or access credit using land as collateral.
Financial Constraints: Women typically have less access to formal credit and savings institutions, restricting their ability to invest in agricultural inputs, equipment, or livestock.
Knowledge and Training Gaps: Agricultural extension services often target male household heads, leaving women with limited access to modern farming techniques and business skills.
Market Participation: Cultural norms may restrict women’s participation in markets, limiting their ability to sell products directly and negotiate favorable prices.
Time and Labor Constraints: Women’s multiple responsibilities including childcare, household management, and agricultural work create time constraints that limit their ability to participate in training or expand their operations.
Decision-Making Power: Even when women generate agricultural income, they may have limited control over how that income is used within households.
HOG4Education’s women empowerment program addresses these specific challenges through targeted interventions designed to enhance women’s economic independence and community leadership.
Why Pig Farming Empowers Women Entrepreneurs
Pig farming offers unique advantages that align with women’s circumstances and capabilities in rural Uganda:
Manageable Scale: Pig farming can be established and managed on small plots near homes, allowing women to balance farming with other responsibilities.
Quick Income Generation: Pigs mature rapidly, providing income every 6-8 months that women can use for immediate family needs or business expansion.
Lower Physical Requirements: Compared to cattle farming or extensive crop cultivation, pig farming requires less intensive physical labor, making it accessible for women of all ages.
Home-Based Operations: Pig farming operations can be located near homes, allowing women to combine animal care with childcare and household responsibilities.
Individual Ownership: Pigs can be individually owned and managed by women, providing clear ownership rights and income control.
Value-Added Opportunities: Pig farming enables women to develop related businesses like feed preparation, pig breeding, or processed pork products.
Success Story: Judith Akello – From Dependency to Leadership
Judith Akello’s transformation exemplifies the power of women’s empowerment through pig farming. At 28, Judith was trapped in an abusive marriage with no independent income and three young children to support. Traditional cultural expectations limited her options for economic independence.
Initial Challenges (2023):
- Dependent on husband’s irregular income from casual labor
- No independent income source or savings
- Limited decision-making power in household financial matters
- Isolated from community networks and support systems
- Children’s education threatened by unpaid school fees
Joining HOG4Education’s Women’s Program: In March 2024, Judith learned about HOG4Education’s specialized women’s empowerment program through a community health worker. The program’s approach specifically addressed her needs as a woman facing domestic challenges.
Specialized Support Received:
- Childcare Assistance: Training sessions included childcare provision, allowing Judith to participate fully without leaving children unattended
- Flexible Scheduling: Training times accommodated women’s household responsibilities and children’s school schedules
- Women-Only Groups: Safe spaces for discussing challenges specific to female farmers and sharing experiences with peers
- Legal Support: Information about women’s rights, property ownership, and accessing legal assistance when needed
- Financial Independence Training: Specific focus on managing income independently and building personal savings accounts
Business Development and Growth: Judith started with three piglets provided through the program and intensive business training focused on financial independence.
First Six Months Results (March-September 2024):
- Successfully raised and sold first batch of pigs: 680,000 UGX profit
- Opened independent savings account: 200,000 UGX initial deposit
- Paid children’s school fees without requesting money from husband
- Purchased 4 additional piglets for expansion
- Gained confidence in business decision-making
Continued Success (September 2024-January 2025):
- Expanded to 12 pigs with regular breeding cycle
- Monthly income averaging 750,000 UGX from pig sales
- Built separate savings accounts for each child’s education
- Contributed equally to household expenses, changing family dynamics
- Became mentor for new women entering the program
Personal and Social Transformation: “The program didn’t just teach me pig farming,” Judith reflects. “It taught me that I have the right to make decisions about my own life and my children’s future. My husband now consults me about major family decisions because I contribute financially.”
Judith now leads a women’s farming cooperative, advocates for girls’ education in her community, and serves as a role model for other women facing similar challenges.

Breaking Cultural Barriers: The Akiror Women’s Cooperative
The Akiror Women’s Cooperative in Kumi Municipality demonstrates how women can challenge traditional barriers through collective action and mutual support. Formed by 15 women who completed HOG4Education’s program, the cooperative addresses cultural limitations through innovative approaches.
Traditional Barriers Faced:
- Cultural restrictions on women attending markets independently
- Limited access to credit and financial services
- Male control over household agricultural decisions
- Isolation from agricultural training and extension services
- Limited participation in community decision-making
Collective Solutions Implemented:
Group Marketing: Members pool their pigs for collective sales, achieving better prices while supporting each other in market interactions.
Rotating Credit: Internal savings and credit system enables members to access capital for business expansion without external male guarantors.
Shared Knowledge: Regular meetings for sharing farming techniques, business strategies, and problem-solving approaches.
Community Advocacy: Collective voice in advocating for women’s participation in local agricultural programs and community development initiatives.
Intergenerational Mentorship: Experienced members mentor newcomers, creating sustainable knowledge transfer and support systems.
Results and Impact:

- 12 of 15 members now own land independently through their pig farming profits
- 8 members serve in leadership positions in community organizations
- 45 children from member families have improved school attendance and performance
- Cooperative has inspired 6 similar groups in surrounding communities
“When we work together, we are stronger than any cultural barrier,” explains Mary Akiror, the cooperative’s leader. “We’ve shown our community that women can be successful farmers and business leaders.”

Technical Knowledge: Women-focused technical training ensures female farmers have equal access to modern agricultural knowledge and techniques.
Market Access: Group marketing approaches and buyer relationship development help women participate effectively in agricultural markets.

Success Story: Rose Namukose – Transforming Traditional Roles
Rose Namukose, 45, represents a different category of women empowerment – older women who have spent decades in traditional roles but discover new possibilities through pig farming.
Background and Traditional Role: Rose spent 20 years as a subsistence farmer’s wife, following traditional patterns of male decision-making and female labor without independent income. With five children and limited education, she accepted her circumstances as unchangeable.
Catalyst for Change: When her husband became ill and couldn’t work, Rose faced the possibility of family poverty and children dropping out of school. Traditional support systems proved inadequate for the family’s needs.
Entering HOG4Education’s Program: Despite initial skepticism from family and community members who questioned whether older women could learn new skills, Rose joined the program determined to provide for her family.
Learning and Growth Process: Rose discovered that her decades of agricultural experience provided an excellent foundation for pig farming. Her knowledge of animal behavior, plant cultivation, and household management translated effectively to pig farming enterprise.
Results and Transformation:
- Established successful 8-pig operation generating 650,000 UGX monthly
- Paid all children’s school fees and supported husband’s medical treatment
- Purchased additional land for expansion using pig farming profits
- Became community advocate for older women’s participation in agricultural programs
- Trains other mature women in pig farming and business management
“I learned that age and experience are advantages, not limitations,” Rose explains. “Young women have energy, but older women have wisdom and patience that make us successful farmers.”
